Dogs offer us great companionship. They deserve their reputation as man’s best friend! However, there are certain types of dogs that more easily follow commands. This skill is   considered ‘working intelligence’. How do you know if a dog is smart?

Most dog experts agree that levels of intelligence can be based on measures such as obedience, instincts and ability to adapt. It’s important to note that dogs that are more social and emotionally dependent on people may be easier to train but often lack intuitive smarts. Additionally, a dog like a hound may not be as receptive, but they usually possess superior senses, such as sight and smell.

There is even research that suggests that bigger dogs may be smarter than smaller breeds. Companion dogs have been bred to have very specific traits. Many owners want a pet that is non-confrontational and calm. This means that over time there have been many mall breeds bred down from larger breeds, meaning that the similar instincts and smarts have been passed down.

So, who are the dogs considered to be the most intelligent?

Border Collie

Border Collies are one of the smartest dog breeds. They are herders whose intelligence ranks very high. Capable of learning new commands in very short periods of time, the border collie makes a great family pet or working dog. These breeds are often found on farms helping to herd animals and watch over the property. Border Collies are very high energy and are happiest when they have a job to do.

There are a plethora of poodle types. Goldendoodles, cockapoos, and whoodles are all breeds that fall into the poodle category. However, the standard poodle ranks very high in intelligence. Not only is this breed hypoallergenic, but they’re also great working dogs. Poodles are graceful, agile, and very obedient. The breed is known to excel in a variety of canine sports and is often seen competing in dog shows.

German Shepherd

There’s a reason that German Shepherds are commonly trained as police and medical assistance dogs. The breed displays consistent obedience and loyalty. They’re very active animals and require focused exercise, training, and attention. Furthermore, German Shepherds place in the top tier for their ability to learn new commands. The breed places in the 95 percentile for understanding a new command and following it after only five repetitions.

Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers are ranked as the fourth smartest dog breed. These dogs show exemplary obedience and working intelligence. Not only are they easy to train, but they’re also one of the friendliest types of dogs. Retrievers make fantastic pets for people with children and are known for their goofy personality.
